Samba Band Teambuilding
Drumming at work as a conference activity, team-building event, for personal achievement or group development but above all....... FUN!
The Where’s the One? philosophy is that you don’t need to have touched a instrument to enjoy making music for the first time. As a tool, music making is a powerful analogue to the team process, and reflects many aspects of group dynamics, team-working and individual involvement.
Group sizes from 6 to 300, session lengths from 30 mins to a whole day (typically 1.5 - 2 hours). The Brazilian Samba is a very popular choice of rhythm - it has the buzz of carnival but at the same time is accessible for everyone to play with just a little tuition. All the instruments are provided, you just need a clear, carpeted room and neighbours that don’t mind loud drumming!

Here’s how it works.....
The drumming workshop begins with ice-breakers and warm-ups to ensure the group’s mood is kept up-beat, relaxed and ready for music-making. Next, everyone takes their own choice among the instruments, from large bass drums, snare drums and smaller hand-held percussion such as bells and shakers. With everyone then in sub-groups of instruments, the process of becoming a band innately mirrors the team environment that the participants work in day-to-day. The facilitator keeps the group energy at the maximum, and tailors the rhythms and breaks to exactly match the dynamics of the group. The facilitator will reflect the wider themes of the day as required: typically references to teamwork, personal style, support and commitment are woven together with the language of music and rhythm.
The group is taken through the rhythms and breaks and brought gently and enjoyably to a finale where everyone involved experiences the achievement of playing in a samba band together for the first time.
Using drumming in this way has many applications:

Using drumming in this way has many applications:
- One-off drumming workshops that create a Samba Band in around 1.5 to 2 hours designed to fit in with your conference programme
- Short workshop series giving a similar experience to different teams working on the same project, giving a shared experience for everyone.
- longer term involvement developing a group with a more in-depth music programme tailored towards individual needs.
- Every group and venue is different - contact Where’s the One? directly to talk about your rhythm requirements!
